Good morning! John 14 comes during a point where Jesus tells His disciples that, yes, He is returning back to the Father but He would not leave them alone–He would send them the Holy Spirit, described as “another Helper, to be with you, even the Spirit of truth” (John 14:16-17). He will not leave us as orphans.
Thus, the Spirit comes alongside us to strengthen and empower us as followers of Jesus to follow His commands. This same Spirit is the Spirit that pours His love into our hearts (Romans 5:5). Christ sends the Spirit to help us all along the way, changing our hearts from self and sin to that which the Spirit applies from Christ’s death and resurrection.
The Spirit shows us the way by opening up the Word to our hearts and minds (1 Corinthians 2:10-16). So do not despair. You are not alone. The Spirit counsels, convicts, cares–and, yes, converts. May this bring great refreshment and encouragement to our souls.
