Good morning! How many different ways could we answer this question, for there are many different reasons for our souls to be downcast. Anxiety and depression rates rise higher by the day in our country. If someone were to answer the question, “Why so downcast, O my soul?” Their answer may be, “Lots of reasons!”
What David is saying here is that, yes, you will have lots of reasons that will bring about discouragement and the “blues.” His point, however, is that we have an opportunity to put our hope in the God who is with us in those valleys. The realization of the broken condition of the world is also a realization that we have nothing in this world in which to put our hope.
Yet, we do have Someone!
In Colossians 1:27, we read a very small phrase with a very powerful meaning: “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Christ is our only and ultimate hope. Where does your hope lie? Education? Technology? Reputation? No wonder we are downcast–we are expecting these things to provide something that only Christ can provide!
Put your hope in the Triune God! The Father authors our salvation, the Son accomplishes our salvation, and the Spirit applies our salvation. Put your hope in the One who gives hope.
