Good morning! Every so often, we hear about certain documents that hold authority over us being living documents. When people say that, what they mean is that those documents can change over time the more we know or the more values of that society change.
When it comes to the Word of God being “living and active” what the spirit here means Is that the word is moving and working in the hearts and minds of those who hear and believe. The word of God “discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
As the Word moves and works in us, we find out from v. 13 that we will all be held accountable for what this Word says. Therefore, we should take this Word seriously and allow it to do the work that God intends for it to do. This should not be something we avoid but something we welcome, for our Creator always has our best and His glory in mind.
The Scriptures are God-breathed (2 Tim 3:16). The Word of God (the Bible) shows us the Word of God (Jesus–John 1:1). Jesus is that key for change.
Are you in the Word? Is the Word working in you?
