Not often in this world do we see a picture of the love and forgiveness that Christ offers in such a setting, but here we have it.
Botham Jean was shot in his own home after Amber Guyger mistook his home for hers and believed he was an intruder. The jury sentenced her to 10 years in prison, sparking outrage both inside and outside the courtroom.
In the midst of all this, his brother gives a statement (1) acknowledging the hurt and the seriousness of the crime that took away his brother, (2) the need for justice to take place, and (3) the forgiveness extended to her for all to see.
Then notice the judge’s actions after the sentencing (go to around the 2:00 mark):
The judge gave Amber her personal copy of the Scriptures and told her to lean into John 3:16 over the next month. She makes it clear that she is doing this because she loves Christ and wants her to know his forgiveness.
We preach about God’s love, justice, forgiveness, and restoration. But this young man and this judge demonstrated it!
What a grace-laced picture of Christ’s work!
